Airbnb is a well known concept for travellers and especially city trippers. Instead of going to the boring and overrated chain hotels, you stay at someone’s home. An interesting and different way to spend the night in a new city. I was very eager to try it out in my own country as a little “spoil ourselves” weekend with great food, location & design in Antwerp!

The best room in town

A couple of months ago, I booked what is probably the most beautiful airbnb in Antwerp; Antwerp loft #2 by Fred. He offers four superb design lofts in Zurgenborg, a hip area of Antwerp.  Loft #2 I would say is definitely the best choice for couples, with the shower being in the middle of the room and all. Loft #1 is just next door and is a bigger loft, suitable for groups up to 5 people. The latest editions to the lofts are #3 and #4, the deluxe suites! These  bright and clean lofts are fully designed by made.com! The furniture and details are very inspirational for your own home interior. The location is amazing and there is a supermarket just around the corner, although you might not want to be cooking in this town. It’s filled with the hippest restaurants!

Eat next door

The lofts are located near The Jane, a heaven for foodies. And you’ll get pretty close to heaven in this place, if not for the food but for the fact that the restaurant is built in an old military hospital. As they say “Food is our religion” , that’s why they built the kitchen at the alter. Before you get excited and ready to get up and go, of course… there is a waiting list. You can start making reservations up to 3 months in advance. Good luck and yes it’s worth it! This place has it all; gastronomic food, a spectacular interior, divine food and a star chef (Dutchie: Sergio Herman), oh and of course 2 Michelin stars!

A little bit more about Antwerp

For some people Antwerp is just the train stop between Paris and Amsterdam. I even had a Canadian friend that went to Antwerp, but only because she got out of the train thinking she had already arrived in Amsterdam. And that is a shame, Antwerp has a lot to offer! This city is a perfect mix of old and new. Old: the medieval city centre, amazing buildings that were still preserved after the WWII bombing, the home of painter Pieter Paul Rubens, the port where emigration started to the US, the list goes on. Antwerp is also a fashion capital! Sure it’s not Paris or Milan, but it has the Antwerp six: Belgium’s most influential avant-garde  fashion collective.
